Maybe Your Wings Are Forming: Why you can't stay small forever

Have you reached the point where you feel there just has to be something more in life? That space where you are ready for the new — and ready to stop staying small just because it feels familiar?
You are not alone.
A lot of women in midlife arrive at a moment where they suddenly realize they can no longer force themselves to shrink into a version of their life that no longer fits. The dreams they once pushed aside start getting louder. The pull toward something different becomes harder to ignore.
And while that can feel exciting, it can also feel incredibly uncomfortable — because growth has a way of asking us to leave behind the version of ourselves we have always known.
Identity Shifts, Transformation, and Why You Can’t Stay Small Forever
The Caterpillar Doesn’t Become a Better Caterpillar
On our latest episode of Real Conversations with Kelly, we talked about personal growth through the lens of metamorphosis — how becoming a new version of yourself is a lot like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly.

And the more I sat with that thought afterward, the more deeply it hit me.
A caterpillar doesn’t become a “better caterpillar.” It becomes something entirely different.
That is what an identity shift really is. It’s not just changing habits or making vision boards or trying harder to think positive thoughts. It’s becoming someone new at your core. Someone who experiences life differently because they now see themselves differently.
And once that shift truly begins, there’s a part of you that can never fully go back.
The butterfly cannot return to crawling leaves once it has experienced flight.
The “Ready, Not Ready” Space We All Know
So many of us live in the “ready, not ready” space. We say we want change. We dream about the life, the relationship, the business, the peace, the confidence. We even take a few brave steps toward it. But the moment discomfort shows up, we retreat back toward what feels familiar.
Not because the familiar is better. Just because it’s known.
“The familiar is not better. It’s just known.”
Sometimes familiarity acts like an overprotective parent standing at the front door saying, “Don’t go out there. You might get hurt.” Meanwhile every part of your soul is staring through the window wanting to experience life in a bigger way.
But safe from what, exactly?
Disappointment? Most of us have survived that many times over. Failure? We’ve all done things we wish we hadn’t, and somehow we are still standing. Embarrassment? Rejection? Uncertainty?
Still standing.
That’s why growth eventually becomes less about avoiding discomfort and more about trusting yourself enough to move anyway.
The caterpillar doesn’t pause halfway through building the chrysalis and decide maybe this transformation thing feels a little too risky. It simply follows the instinct that it was made for more.
When You Fully Step Into Who You’re Becoming
When we allow ourselves to fully step into a new way of being — not just wishing for it, but embodying it — life begins responding differently to us. Opportunities show up. Synchronicities happen. The right people appear. Things begin flowing with less force and more alignment.
Neville Goddard called this The Law of Assumption — the idea that once you become the version of yourself who already has the thing, life reorganizes itself around that identity.
Not because you are pretending. Because you are being.
That is the difference.
And this is why fear slowly starts losing its grip during transformation. Once you have leaped and realized your wings actually work, you stop questioning every gust of wind. You begin trusting that this new version of you can handle things the old version never could.

“The woman who once doubted herself starts speaking up. The woman who stayed hidden starts showing up fully. The woman who kept waiting for permission finally gives it to herself.”
And almost every single time, somewhere in the middle of that freedom, comes the thought:
“Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
But maybe we couldn’t have done it sooner. Maybe the timing of our becoming matters too.
Maybe This Is the Season You Trust the Air
So if you feel the shift happening inside you lately… if the old version of your life feels tight and uncomfortable and too small for who you are becoming… maybe your wings are forming.
Maybe this is the season where you stop clinging to the branch and finally trust the air.
Here are three small shifts to try right now:
1. Name the version of yourself you’re becoming. Write her down. Describe how she thinks, moves, and sees herself. Identity work starts with knowing who you’re stepping into.
2. Notice where you retreat. The next time discomfort shows up, pause before pulling back. Ask yourself: is this actually dangerous — or just unfamiliar?
3. Give yourself permission today. Not later. Not when things calm down. Right now. Decide that you are allowed to take up more space in your own life.
Your Becoming Is Already in Motion
There’s something really powerful in the moment you stop asking if you’re ready and start trusting that you were made for more. The shift is already happening. The question is whether you’ll let yourself become it.
